An open letter to our community…

March 2023

Dear Sudan Studies Conference Community,

We are excited to announce that our annual international Sudan Studies research conference is returning for its seventh year! We have been delighted to host this event for the past seven years and bring together scholars, practitioners and students from around the world. The conference has grown and evolved over the years and we are proud of what we have achieved together.
However, as you all know, we have always run the conference as a free event. As we have been students and then early career researchers ourselves, we appreciate the financial pressures that many of us face, especially in the midst of the current global cost of living crisis. We understand that introducing a fee may be a difficult decision for some of you and we want to assure you that we have not taken this decision lightly.
The conference has been run by unpaid volunteers for the past seven years and we have been able to keep it free of charge thanks to them, the generosity of our sponsors and our supporters. However, as the conference has grown, so too have the costs associated with running it. We have carefully considered our options and believe that introducing a small introductory fee is the best way to ensure that we can continue to deliver a high-quality annual conference that meets the needs of our participants.
We are committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all attendees and we want to emphasize that this change will not affect the quality or spirit of the conference. We remain dedicated to promoting the exchange of ideas and knowledge and we believe that this is the best way to ensure that the conference can continue to grow and evolve.
We recognize that you are all part of this community, and we are undertaking research to better understand your needs and how we can further develop the conference to meet them. We know how important it is to have opportunities to present our work, network with others in our field, and learn from experts in our area of research. We believe that this conference is a unique opportunity to do just that.
Tickets will go on sale on 8 March 2023 and we encourage you to register early to secure your spot. We are excited to bring you a two-day conference this year, with the opportunity to opt-in to extra activities. We are confident that you will find the conference to be a valuable investment of your time and resources.
Thank you for being a part of this community and for supporting us as we work to make this unique conference sustainable and accessible for all.

Best regards,

The Sudan Studies Conference Organising Team
